Coffin: Traditionally, a coffin is a tapered burial container with six sides. It is wider at the shoulders and narrower at the feet.
Casket: A casket is usually rectangular in shape and has four sides. It often has a split-lid for viewing purposes.
The handles for both coffins and caskets serve the same purpose but can vary in design and material. Here are the common types and materials used for these handles:
- Swing Bar Handles: As mentioned earlier, these are attached to the sides of the casket or coffin and can swing outwards. This type of handle makes it easier for pallbearers to carry the casket or coffin.
- Stationary Bar Handles: These are fixed handles that do not swing or move. They are attached to the sides of the casket or coffin and require pallbearers to hold them at a specific angle.
- Individual Handles: Instead of a continuous bar, there may be individual handles spaced along the side of the casket or coffin. This design allows for multiple pallbearers to carry the casket or coffin without having to be in sync.
