What a stated lift weight of 100kg, 150kg or 200kg per handle actually means, how it is tested, and how to work out how many handles a coffin needs.

What A Lift Weight Rating Means

When a product page says a handle is rated at 150kg per piece, that is the load one handle is rated to carry. It is not the weight of coffin the handle can be used on, because a coffin is carried on several handles at once and because you should never plan to the limit of a rating.

We have lift weight testing equipment in the factory and check handles during production. This matters because a load figure is easy to print in a catalogue and considerably harder to demonstrate on a rig.

A rating of 150kg per piece is roughly 1500 newtons. Where a product page shows a rating, it is the figure from our own testing for that reference.

Working It Out

How Many Handles Does A Coffin Need

  • Start from the loaded weight, which is the coffin, the interior, the fittings and the person.
  • Divide by the rated lift weight of one handle to get the theoretical minimum number of handles.
  • Add margin. Load is never shared evenly between bearers, and a coffin is often lifted and set down at an angle.
  • Check the fixing as well as the handle. A rated casting screwed into thin chipboard with the wrong screw is limited by the panel, not by the casting.
  • Where the coffin is unusually heavy or unusually long, tell us and we will point you to the higher rated references.

When Something Has Gone Wrong

Common load and fixing problems and their usual causes
Handle pulls out of the coffin sideAlmost always the fixing, not the casting. Check screw type, screw length and pilot hole against the panel material.
Bar bends under loadBar diameter or bar material is under specified for the coffin length. Ask about a larger diameter or a steel rather than cast bar.
Movable bar binds or will not swingFixing points are not level with each other, or the screws have been overtightened into the claw.
Casting cracks at the fixing pointOvertightening, or a screw driven into hardwood without a pilot hole.
Finish rubs off a plastic partA coated finish is thinner than a plated one. Handle by the body of the part and keep it in the supplied packing until fitting.

What does 150kg per piece mean?
It is the load one handle is rated to carry, roughly 1500 newtons. It is not the coffin weight the handle can be used on, because a coffin is carried on several handles.
How do you test?
On our own lift weight testing equipment at the Wenzhou factory. Load bearing models are checked during production and the result is recorded against the reference number.
Why do some items show no rating?
Because they are decoration. Crucifix, ornament, name plates and corner pieces that do not carry a bar are not load bearing and we would rather leave the field blank than invent a figure.
